Everyone,
Please do remember to fill out the Tryout Questionnaire mentioned in the email! The due date is October 1st, and we need to know if you're coming to test or not (*coughcough* Spencer Liu, Emily, Justin Fernando, Peizhi Liu, James Gu, Robert Mu, Peter Nam) I'm waiting on ya'll. It would suck if I printed out 40 ecology tests and you turned out to be the 41st person. Because you wouldn't get one. Thanks, Justin Zhang Hello testers,
There's been a bunch of new information on tryouts released! New Modified Schedule: Mon 9th Tues 10th Wed 11th Thurs 12th Fri 13th Sat 14th Thermodynamics Ecology Herpetology Material Science Astronomy Hovercraft (at 1788 Flemington Dr, 9:30- 10:30 AM Morning) Mon 16th Tues 17th Wed 18th Thurs 19th Fri 20th Sat 21st Anatomy, Mission Possible Dynamic Planet, Towers Helicopters Mousetrap Vehicle Build Only Makeup Study Only Make Up (at 3888 Old Creek Rd, 6 AM-8 AM Morning) Schedule Changes: Hovercraft has been moved to Saturday the 14th. Friday the 20th is the makeup day for Build makeups ONLY. Saturday the 21st is the day for Study makeups ONLY. It is recommended to avoid study makeups unless absolutely necessary; the Saturday Makeup is at 6AM and we don't want you sleepyheads in our house that early. Build Testing put into steps: 1. Build your stuff together at home. 2. Bring in your stuff before school and stash it somewhere safe (like Mr. Hevel's room 305) 3. Take your stuff out after school and find the proctor at the designated Build Tryout Room. 4. You fill out a standard form on event rules and your tryout device. 5. Turn in standard form. 6. Follow proctor instructions to run your device. 7. Finish and leave with your device. 8. If you are dissatisfied with device, fix and bring it again on Friday for retesting! Notes:
Study Testing put into steps: 1. Study at home. 2. Herpetology testers submit e-binder the day before competition to our email (by uploading it through Google Drive or Google Slides). 3. Bring your cheatsheet/laptop/books before school and stash it somewhere safe (like backpack/locker/Hevel's room) 4. Take your stuff and go to Room 304 after school. Wait for proctor and look for spots you might want to sit in. Starts approximately at 2:15 or 2:30 pm. 5. Follow proctor instructions: testing normally takes 60 minutes. 6. Finish and leave. Notes:
I'd hate for a tester to get confused and miss a tryout day, so read these updates carefully! There are plenty more coming out this week. Good studying/experimenting, Justin Zhang Co-President Hi testers!
There's been a ton of people asking me questions about tryout test/topics lately. I'm flattered by the attention but all those details are already on the Tryout Rules document sent out in the first email! Please go there and read the modifications CAREFULLY before sending me an email! Yes, I'm looking at you, Anatomy/Eco/Herpetology/Helicopter people! Here's a summary of the general/biggest changes: All Division C topics, National or State or Regional, covered. Ecology is run under STATION format. Herpetology has a 50 page limit, e-copy submit to this email the day before testing. Helicopters and towers should bring pre-made blueprints for points as their projects may break after testing. No device portion for Thermodynamics! No testing portion for Hovercraft! I know the build testing process is somewhat unclear so there might be an email with more details coming soon. Go experiment/good studying! Also, we got more unidentifiable/inaccessible emails belonging to "[email protected]" and "[email protected]". If you guys could guess for us that'd be great. Justin Zhang Co-President Hey everyone,
We’re excited that you all have shown interest in Science Olympiad! The information handed out at the first meeting and subsequent powerpoint are attached in this email. If you could not attend the first meeting, be sure to check these out. Powerpoint: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1eW6Fgc7KBQGr9x8h5CrPFAyLJZMsN2bA7XfMXIISgRI/edit?usp=sharing Q&A Handout: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1U9-sSEth1uBf9uoUyx48yfuy9ArNmn11nDZFdsI5qU0/edit?usp=sharing We will be holding tryouts after school in Mr. Hevel’s room (room 304 or 305) on the weeks of October the 9th and 16th. The schedule is as follows. You should use the the 4 weeks between now and then to prepare for them. Schedule: Mon 9th - Thermodynamics Tues 10th - Ecology Wed 11th - Herpetology Thurs 12th - Material Science Fri 13th - Astronomy Sat 14th Mon 16th - Anatomy, Mission Possible Tues 17th - Dynamic Planet, Towers Wed 18th - Helicopters Thurs 19th - Mousetrap Vehicle Fri 20th - Hovercraft Sat 21st - Make Up Tryout Events: 1-3 scale: 1 is highest demand, 3 is lowest demand. This scale indicates the amount of people we are looking for in these events. While this is something to consider, it should only be a minor factor in choosing your events. Study: 3 - Anatomy & Physiology - human body systems event with low notes(max 1 sheet/2 pages) 1 - Ecology - environmental biology event with low notes (max 1 sheet/2 pages) 1 - Herpetology - ID/species event with high notes (max 50 pages) 3 - Dynamic Planet - earth processes event with medium notes (max 4 sheets/8 pages) 2 - Astronomy - stellar/info-laptop event with high notes (laptop) 2 - Thermodynamics (no build portion) - heat-based physics event with any size binder 1 - Material Science - molecular arrangement/lab event with low notes (max 2 sheets/4 pages) Build: 2 - Mousetrap Vehicle - run a wood/aluminum car with a mousetrap for ~7 meters 3 - Helicopters - fly a small wood helicopter up in the air for long time 2 - Hovercraft (no study portion) - run a hovercraft through a track 2 - Towers - build a tall wood tower that can hold at most 15 kg 1 - Mission Possible - design a box puzzle with chemical and physical parts Again, these are the only events that will be tested at tryouts! DO NOT prepare for an event not on this list! Study Tryout Information: You’ll have to choose at least two study events to test for the study team. There will be no general knowledge tests for study this year. Also, we want a clear indication of how much effort YOU have put in, so please do not share tryout cheatsheet/notes with others. If you have done so (which is obvious when reading test responses), your score will be cancelled and everyone involved will have their names blacklisted. Build Tryout Information: To try out for build, you will need to choose one of the above build events. Unlike previous years, trying out for build will involve building a device and filling out a form about it and basic rule information later. The device is then run according to event rules. Build events are naturally slower-paced. If it is impossible for you to complete a competition-worthy Build in time, please bring what results you have to us on tryout day with planned blueprints and future improvements. Good work accepted. Hybrid Tryout Information: It is possible to tryout for both study and build. In this case, you will have to choose one study and one build event from the above list. You should know, however, that this is not a recommended choice, since doing well on both events will not be easy. Additional Note: You are allowed to try out for more events than is required (2 study; 1 build; or 1 build, 1 study); however, it is recommended to take no more than what is required, as doing well on a couple specific events is better than mediocrity in several. Testing in more events may give you a better chance of making the team since you have more chances to prove your abilities. Nevertheless, you might spread yourself thin. You should choose the best strategy that works for you when deciding what combination and how many tests you want to take. ________________________________________________________ Registration for Tryouts: Once you have decided on a plan for tryouts, submit complete information to the form on our website: https://goo.gl/forms/CFjgDPyC5S8d6Xrp1 Please complete this form ASAP. We won’t check the questionnaires after October 1, so you must submit it before then. In the case you forget, just fill out the questionnaire and notify us afterwards. ________________________________________________________ Advice for doing well: -- Don’t procrastinate lol. To do well, you should really start studying now. Three weeks is not a lot of time to study/build with the precision that’s necessary for success. Tryouts will be competitive, as all of you saw how many people were in the room. You’ll be competing against the best of your peers and former members for spots on the team. Waiting until the last week won’t work, don’t underestimate the tests. -- Don’t under- or overestimate the competition. Of course, as mentioned before, competition will be tough. However, you all have very similar chances of making the team. Background knowledge plays a very limited role in scio. Most events are not taught well or at all in high school. As a result, most of you are starting on the same level. Study smart and you’ll have a fair chance at the team! -- Science Olympiad is a serious time commitment, for both Study or Build, A or B Team. Last year, members spent an over 25 hours studying for tryout tests alone. I spent well over 70 hours on Electric Vehicle and Robot Arm to place 1st and 2nd in states. Know that Scio (especially A team) needs a lot of time. -- Read the Rules This is especially important for build events because you may be disqualified for construction violations. Study events also have a list of topics that may blindside you if you do not know the rules. Tryout Rule Clarifications & General Event Tips here _______________________________________________________________ Finally, we’d like to clarify that our A, B, and C teams will NOT be split by grade. While we expect this to occur naturally due to varying amounts of experience, being a freshman will not hurt your tryout scores. Thank you all for showing interest in Science Olympiad, and I hope you all use your time wisely for the next 3 weeks. And if you know of anyone that is interested in Sci-O and was not able to attend the meeting last Wednesday and Thursday, please forward them this e-mail. If you have any more questions to ask or want to change what you submitted in the registration form, feel free to email us at [email protected]. Happy studying and good luck! -THS Scio Officers Official Website: thsscio.weebly.com Dynamic Planet, Towers Elections were afterschool this Friday at Mr. Hevel's room. Officer elections took place after each candidate gave their speech. Candidate list below:
Especially notable performance by Peter Nam, who made a boss rap.
Congratulations to: Chittesh, Justin, Claire and Srijani. Freshman Orientations are on Monday. Science Olympiad will have a club stand there. The event starts at 6:30 pm.
